Saturday, October 29, 2022

10am-2pm (or when done)

@ Quantum Machine Works

What is Scent Detective?

One dark and stormy night, a crime was committed at Quantum Machine Works. You and your K9 partner are tasked with sniffing out the clues and solving the whodunit mystery.

Scent Detective is a fun nosework event composed of three separate scent puzzles. You can complete one puzzle, or try all three.

How does it work?

You will be given a designated time slot to arrive, check in, ask questions, and start your search. No walkthroughs will be allowed, but a video walkthrough will be provided to participants ahead of time.

You can choose which puzzles you want to play. Each puzzle will earn you points which, combined with time taken to solve the puzzle, will determine your overall placement. If you complete all three, you can climb the ranks and be promoted to lead Scent Detective!

Who can play?

Any dog that has been conditioned to search Wintergreen. Handlers with multiple dogs may compete, but only the first dog run will be allowed to claim points and earn placements (unless multiple handlers are used).

Puzzles

5x5x5

Crime scene investigators identified five rooms where the culprit left clues. You will have 5 minutes to find 5 hides in 5 rooms. You must verbally identify the hot object in each room (e.g. "The green purse"). This is a series of interior searches with a speed component. Read more...

100-bone challenge

Evidence has been collected and flagged for processing. You will be given 15 mins to sift through 100 pieces of evidence and identify as many hot objects as you can. Each correctly-identified object will  earn you +1 point; each incorrectly-identified object will result in -1 points. This is a modified container search with an unknown number of hides.

Nosewitness Lineup

Police have generated a lineup of potential suspects. You and your K9 partner have been called in as the only nosewitness to identify the culprit and their weapon of choice. This is a distance search. The handler must stay in a designated area while the dog searches independently, either off-leash or with a long line. Read more...
